선인장은 현란한 음악과 네온 조명 속에서 다시 한번 한숨을 내쉬었다.

뾰족한 몸통 위로 반짝이는 초록색 글리터가 떨어지자 선인장은 눈살을 찌푸렸다—오늘 밤만큼은 특히 참기 힘든 '디스코 사막' 테마였다.

이 모든 재앙은 그 지루하고 까다로운 마법사의 싸구려 테라코타 화분 하나 때문이었다—가게에서 3천 원도 안 하는 걸 자신이 깬 게 무슨 대수란 말인가.

매달 보름이면 황량했던 모래 언덕은 정신 나간 전구와 불편한 선글라스를 낀 뱀들로 넘쳐났고, 본인은 무슨 유명한 DJ라도 된 양 마이크 앞에 서야 했다.

그런데 기막힌 건 자신이 음악을 틀 때마다 이웃 선인장들은 마치 가시에 전류라도 흐른 듯 몸을 흔들었고, 사막여우들은 꼬리 끝을 빙빙 돌리며 묘한 웃음을 지었다.

"차라리 바싹 마른 모래알 하나가 되는 편이 낫겠지," 선인장은 투덜댔지만, 어느새 그의 가시 끝은 리듬을 따라 까딱거리고 있었다.

그래도 모든 저주엔 자기만의 작은 위로가 있는 법—적어도 그의 파티엔 풍선을 다는 어리석은 짓을 하는 녀석이 없다는 사실이 바로 그것이었다.
